FEBRUARY 2017 ISSUE

EXILE (February 2017):

2017 February Monthly Exile MOBB Interview

Q: First of all, please tell us the details of how the sub-unit was formed.

MINO: I got to participate in Bobby's solo song by featuring and people around us said wouldn't a duet be better than featuring so that's how we formed a sub-unit.

Q: Before that did you want to do it together?

BOBBY: Yes!
MINO: Of course. Since trainee, we both really liked hip hop so I thought it'd be good to do it together sometime and we even had a conversation about it as well.

Q: Followed by Korea, you guys are also debuting In Japan as well and does It bring up different emotions compared to the debut of the group that you are in?

MINO: I had a lot of pressure when debuting as a group but this time, I have more expectations. Each of our groups have a lot of members but in our sub-unit, it's just Bobby and I the two of us. We're as much free and there's a lot more to do so it naturally increased my expectations.
BOBBY: When feeling pressured, it's because you think that it's not right to not show them a more cool image and an upgraded image than now but this time, like what Mino hyung said, I thought that I should work hard, focusing on the things that we could do as a sub-unit.

Q: The sub-unit name is from MOB which was an idea made by both but added another B and decided on MOBB which has the letters of both names.

MINO: After the subunit was confirmed, we had more opportunities in talking together. Not only our ideas, we tried to actively accept the opinions of staff members. As a member of Winner, I try to cherish the group's colour but in this sub-unit, I want to express the colour as Mino as much as I can.
BOBBY: Like Mino hyung, I also think that it'd be good to show my own colour and give a variety by the themes that a song has.

Q: I think you guys worked on it while working on each others' group activities as well so how did you proceed on the work when you don't meet each other?

BOBBY: We started working on the songs since around June and there were definitely a lot of times where we couldn't work on it together. But for example, I leave a message like making a suggestion on what Mino hyung worked on then when I come back, we look at that message and continue working.
MINO: We had a tight schedule but I think we were able to focus as much.

Q: While working, was there anything that you thought this was only possible as a sub-unit?

BOBBY: To simply say it, the album itself is a sub-unit so I think that because it was Mino hyung and I, we were able to make it.
MINO: I thought Bobby really honestly doesn't mind the others and expresses what he wants to say in his lyrics.

Q: It is 'Full House' and 'Hit Me' that can make us feel the two rappers' energy and joy but is there a theme?

BOBBY: For Full House, we used the scene of a lot of people gathering in a place like a club and enjoying the music together as the image.
MINO: I think a lot of people can relate to Hit Me. It is a song where we have time but there aren't people to play with so we continuously call our friends on the phone and as a result, we play with a lot of people. So the theme is quickly call out a friend. I also call instead of SNS when I want to quickly play. (laughs)

Q: Is it Bobby who you call first?

MINO: I think it depends on the time and location. There are times when it's Bobby and when it's someone else.

Q: In iKON Japan Tour 2016 which was held in Autumn, they did a performance in front of many audiences.

MINO: I thought that it was a very fun composition and it was a great honour to be able to do MOBB performance on iKON's live stage. We were able to do it very joyfully so I think that the joy was delivered to the people watching. During MOBB stage, wouldn't iKON members have the time to take a breath? Although Bobby couldn't. (laughs)
BOBBY: As expected, what I can show as iKON and what I can show as MOBB is different so I was glad that I was able to show the possibilities that this subunit has to a lot of people.

Q: The songs include songs that you previously showed in Show Me The Money or solo songs including the new songs.

MINO: The new song 'Body' that I sing is a song that I wrote by first coming up with the keyword 'body' and I wanted to make a song where it can be enjoyed with a sexy vibe so I incorporated various emotions. I think I was able to express a colour as an individual different to a group.
BOBBY: HOLUP! (literal meaning: to become completely drunk) is like the title itself, I imagined being completely drunk and I wrote with exaggeration. I didn't write it while drinking alcohol (laughs). I listened to the track and I received an impression of heating up so a thought sparked what would it be like if i wrote the lyrics with the tension of being drunk.

Q: What are the things that you respect each other as rappers?

Mino to Bobby
I was able to once again feel that Bobby is usually simple-minded and kind but in terms of music, he becomes a very serious person. I felt that seriousness from a long time ago so it was a part that I used to respect but as we're working together, it turned into deeper respect. His attitude towards making attempts on doing this and that is cool. I think he has great sense as a rapper.

Bobby to Mino
The thing I respect the most is the lyrics that Mino hyung writes. I think the content is something that anyone who listens to it, can relate. Not only as a rapper but after working together, I felt that he is a perfectionist. He spares no effort in perfectly achieving even the subtle parts. I'm not that type so I was surprised but I felt like we filled in each other's lacking parts. I don't mean it in a weird way but I was charmed by everything!

Q: The choice of words, flow, etc. in Bobby, rap is unconstrained and are you aware of it?

BOBBY: If I'm aware of it then from there, I can't be as free so I express it just as it is.

Q: I think the relationship must've gotten even better as the two of you are working together.

BOBBY: Yes. The relationship got even better to an extent that if Mino hyung is the soup then I'm the noodles. When together, we're ramen (laughs). We always meet for work so I think I know nearly everything about Mino hyung as a rapper. Although i don't know much about private Mino hyung but as much as he has experience since he debuted first and is older than me, he is a senior that I can lean on like a hyung.
MINO: How could you say ramen (laughs). When we were trainees, we talked often but after we started working in each other's group, we didn't have much time and our relationship clearly did deepen as we're together right now and we're able to have a different conversation compared to when we were trainees.

Q: Lastly, please tell us MOBB's future plans.

BOBBY: Although there were songs other than the songs featured in the album, the fact that we couldn't let everyone listen to all of it is unfortunate so to meet everyone with more cool music is MOBB's goal.
MINO: To Bobby and I, MOBB is a place where we can freely do things that we wanted to do. In the future, I want to deliver good music to everyone that you can feel the charm as a sub-unit.
