Bobby's solo interview for WI?xT magazine:
• [Bobby's musical roots?]
My grandfather was a music conductor. So music plays inside my house all the time. I was also given an MP3 player when i was in kindergarten, and I listen to music ever since. At first I listened to idols' songs then i changed to hip hop. Since primary school, I played around by copying raps. Started from Korean hip hop, then I tried copying overseas artists like Jay-Z. I started writing my own lyrics when I was a junior high school student
• [Is it because hiphop and rap were popular?]
I don't think it's because it was popular. In my case, I actually thought that "in order to be popular among the girls, you have to be good at singing" (lol). But I'm not good at singing so I changed to rapping. And at that time I become interested and starting to like music more.
• [I see. iKON's song has a strong hiphop taste too, but how do you keep the balance between the sound that you guys like and the kind of music fans wish to hear?]
First of all, because we are idols, we think that we should do the kind of music that people will like. I think the most important part is finding which part that you music maniacs and lovers like the most in a song. I personally feel that our WELCOME BACK album has a strong idol-like feeling. Also from now on, we will step up our hip hop game bit by bit.
• [So what's your role in the group?]
I'm the rapper and dancer so I increase the tension entirely.
• [Can you share your strength and weaknesses?]
"Free and positive" is my strength, and can sometimes be my weakness too. I'm too positive that whatever people say, i take it positively. And, i hate it when i get tied up to something. Since I'm working in a group with other members, I have to fix this kind of attitude. Also, I'm bad with cleaning up stuff. (lol) I'll immediately start to think "this is so troublesome".
• [Where do you create your music?]
We have a training room for making music, so I create there a lot. Compared to our dorms, i can focus more there. When making music, I first decide a big topic, from there I get ideas and "shape" it up. I get lyrics from other members too, mainly from B.I. The ideas on the theme of the songs comes a lot when I'm relaxed. Sometimes the ideas like "ahh..this kind of song might be good" comes before i go to bed.

• [What for are you aiming after this?]
Before, I used to think that "in order to perform live, i have to create music". But now, I want to create a large variety of music that people can listen to. And, I think it's important that I find my own personality. And from that, I'll be happy if i can show you my mature side.

WOOFIN x BOBBY: Exclusive Hip-Hop Talk

"When I was in my fourth year of elementary school, I moved to America and spent 5 years there. From when I started living there, I began to listen to Korean rap. Although I also listened to the HIPHOP popular there, as I thought, the tracks which were full of slang were too hard for me at the time *laughs". Looking forward, after 5 years there, I returned to Korea and naturally caught on to the rapper scene. I especially looked up to Korean rappers like DYNAMIC DUO and DOK2, and my ambition to become a rapper was formed because of them.

Although I do think that Korea's HIPHOP scene gradually became bigger, as I thought, the mainstream and underground HIPHOP scenes gave completely different feelings. I was a big fan of KOHH, and it became an chance to know the song, It's GMA by KEITH APE - which was the talk of underground rap in Korea. Actually, underground rap lyrics are also more honest, and you can rap about anything you like, and the subjects you tackle gradually increase. On the other hand, mainstream rap was widening its base of listeners; we have people from children to the elderly listening to our music. And so, we had to be more careful for the words/language we used. In that situation, occasionally there was a feeling of strictness, a feeling like being limited in all directions. But, because we had the chance to have a lot of people to listen to our music, I don't think it was a trying period. Of course, I think if we can act in a way to bridge overground (mainstream) and underground rap, that'd be my wish. I think now is really a transition period for Korean rap. Not just for Korea, but that can be said to be the trend for Asia, isn't it? If we're talking about the HIPHOP scene, I think Japan has advanced as well. From when the HIPHOP scene was small, Japan was already building its own unique style. For both Japan and Korea, it wasn't only copying of foreign styles, but searching for their own styles to stand on their own. For my own goal as a rapper, I want to become like JAY Z. That's my first goal. Then, I want to be like B.I.G, to leave behind songs that will be known and remembered even after my death. I want to become a rapper who can be talked about as a legend. As IKON, I want to promote more worldwide, and try having more collaborations, and I think, "When can I fulfil my dream of sharing the stage with JAY Z?" *laughs*
